UK: Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and Plastic Packaging Tax

In the UK, the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) law shifts the financial burden of recycling costs on to businesses.This regulation aligns with the “polluter pays” principle, meaning companies that place packaging on the market must be financially responsible for its recycling. This incentivises businesses to adopt more sustainable packaging solutions, potentially reducing the use of hard-to-recycle materials.

Additionally, the Plastic Packaging Tax, introduced in 2022, requires businesses to pay tax when importing or manufacturing more than 10 tonnes of plastic packaging that contains less than 30% of recycled material yearly. This tax encourages the use of recycled plastics and discourages reliance on non-recycled, virgin plastics, aiming to decrease overall plastic waste.

 

EU: Ambitious Targets and Industry Pushback

The EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation sets ambitious goals, including reducing overall packaging by 5% by 2030, and ensuring that 50-65% of plastic packaging comes from recycled content by 2040.
